About the Neighborhood

Speedway City became a town in 1926 and remains a town governed by a Town
Manager, Town Council, and Clerk-Treasurer. The boundaries for the original
platted city were Main Street to Winton Avenue, 10th to 16th streets.

The original platted area, now a designated historic district, contains homes
built mostly in the 1920s. During the 1940s another surge of houses were built
in the historic district.  There were also many houses built within the
Association boundaries during the 1940s and 50s.  The most recent round of
houses were built in the 1990s on the remaining vacant lots.
Three churches, five restaurants, pizza carry out, chicken
carry-out, cleaners, gas station, trophy and clock shop, lawyer,
doctor, pet groomer, antique mall, flower shop, funeral home,
three beauty salons, a barber, Speedway Town Press, United
States Auto Club and Chase Bank are within walking distance of
all association residents.
The majority of the homes are one-story bungalows
of two to three bedrooms.

A variety of businesses can be found within the
association boundaries. The upscale restaurant,
Dawson's on Main, opened in June 2006, as well as,
an antique store called Main Attraction Antique Mall,
also opened in 2006, are examples of what the town
is doing to revitalize Main Street.
